We often get asked where we come up with some of these names. In this case it was easy. Della Terra is Italian for “From the Earth.” What more do we need to say? It’s the perfect description for this wonderful style. Each piece is hand fitted with a very high end tightly woven fabric wrap, in either black or white. Each frame is handcrafted in and imported from Italy, and are sourced from sustainable forestry programs. All you have to do is pick which frame and linen works best for you. For years I have lovingly called this “The Hike from Hell”, aka a death march.
You see there are three ways to get here and none of them are easy. There is the short route, four miles pretty much straight up from ‘The Loop’ to the Chalet. Then there is the fairly flat but long 10+ mile hike along the Highline Trail leaving from Logans Pass. But then there is the hardest one, arguably the most stunning one out of all the options. The trail I prefer begins on the north side in the Many Glacier part of the park. It travels up and over Swiftcurrent Pass (bypassing the fire tower in route - you’re seriously nuts if you include this in your itinerary - but I love ya if you do!) dropping down to the Granite Park Chalet leaving you with a final downhill 4 mile hike out. In total it’s about a 12 mile day. But oh what a day!
For the past two decades I have taken my photography workshop attendees on this hike. We stay for sunset near the Granite Park Chalet and hike out in the dark. Usually we get back to our ‘camps’ around 2:30am…we left at 4am the day before. It is an adventure to say the least. Last week, having just turned 62, I took my last trip with workshop folks up and over this pass. One fellow kept telling me it had better be worth it.
